Welcome to the week - here's your regular shot of hand-curated reading material; remember to forward it on to anyone you think might enjoy the read!

CTO Craft needs your help - we're planning some leadership workshops for engineering managers, focused on soft skills, self-management, strategy, motivation and other topics you won't normally learn organically while coming up the software development career track. We'd like to know what subjects you would like to learn about, for example motivating people, owning a technology budget, dealing with the board, coaching people, managing your own energy, preventing over-engineering - what would you most like to learn about?

Just drop us a reply to this email with your ideas, and we'll be in touch!

If you would like to know more about joining the free Community or attending one of our regular Mentoring Circles, fill in your details here, and we'll be in touch!

Check out the TMW Archive. There's some real treasure in there.

Check In - Draw the Iteration (#31)

Participants draw some aspect of the iteration

Distribute index cards and markers. Set a topic, e.g. one of the following:

  • How did you feel during the iteration?
  • What was the most remarkable moment?
  • What was the biggest problem?
  • What did you long for?
  • If the last iteration had been a circus performance, what part did you play? Juggler, funambulist, clown, knife-thrower, ...Ask the team members to draw their answer. Post all drawings on a whiteboard. For each drawing let people guess what it means, before the artist explains it.

Metaphors open new viewpoints and create a shared understanding.

That's it!

If you know someone who'd benefit from receiving TMW, send them here: Tech Manager Weekly.

Have an amazing week!
